Escape Plan Zer0 (TFTBL Alternate Universe)

Description

As Shade would say, "Let me say right off the very bat..."

I tagged this as "mature" because there is some blood. It's nothing worse than was in the actual game (in fact, it's considerably less bloody than the actual game), but I thought it was better safe than sorry.

Now then, about this project...

I feel like I should preface this by saying that I loved each and every episode of Tales from the Borderlands. I thought the writers did an amazing job, and in no way do I intend for this mini-comic to imply that I think I could have written a better story.

It's just that there were some... INCIDENTS... in episode 4 ("Escape Plan Bravo") that bummed me out. [Looking at you, SCOOTER.] I also really missed Vaughn in episode 4. He's my favorite Tales character, and if you had Fiona talk Athena out of killing Cassius at the end of episode 3, Vaughn isn't in episode 4 at all, except for a brief phone call to Rhys in the last chapter, which lasts all of 5 seconds. If you had Fiona encourage Athena to exact her revenge on Cassius, then you get to have Vaughn in the first few chapters of episode 4. Unfortunately, if Vaughn's in your game, he's Vallory's hostage, and does not get to go to space with all the cool kids.

And, it turns out, Vallory can stab the sh*t out of Vaughn. In the ribs! If you have Fiona say anything besides "yes" when Vallory first asks you to work for her... STAB. If, like me, you are then sitting in shock, with your hands clasped over your mouth in abject horror, and you therefore fail to respond in a timely fashion to Vallory's second request... STAB A LOT. So much so, in fact, that I actually thought she had KILLED him.

My exact reaction was "Oh HELL no." I was so angry at Vallory, I wanted to reach into my monitor, grab that rocket launcher off of Fiona, and just club Vallory with it.

So, I decided to draw an alternate version of Escape Plan Bravo, where I could punish Vallory accordingly for damaging my favorite character... and as a bonus, if Vallory is no longer around to force people to go to Helios to fetch an upgrade for her, then a certain mechanic need never get fused to an exploding rocket.

"Win-win-win, as they say. Nobody says that. I say it."  -- Sir Hammerlock

And then I remembered that Laura Bailey (Fiona's voice actress) used to voice a few characters in a little anime series called Dragonball Z... and I knew what I had to do...

You can download the PDF, or you should be able to just view it in the preview window, assuming your browser supports that.

EDITED TO ADD:

I should mention that I used some custom Photoshop brushes to get some of the effects throughout this piece. If you are interested in snagging them for yourself, they can be found here:

Huh! I guess I'll have to stand next to Athena, give Cassius the dead-eye and slide my finger across my throat next time I play. I didn't know you could have Vaughn around at all in Episode 4!

Slightly off topic, but since you did an anime crossover, I'm sure you have at one point picked "See You Space Cowboy" as Scooter's farewell message. One of the Hyperion guards says "Is that from an anime or something?" That guard is voiced by Steve Blum, who was of course in Cowboy Bepop. We met him at Lexington Comic Con a few years ago. :)
